Muscatine, IA (June 26, 2025) – A fatal crash on Burlington Rd Tuesday morning claimed the life of one individual and left another seriously injured and airlifted to a trauma center, according to a report released by the Iowa State Patrol.
The collision occurred at approximately 7:13 a.m. on June 24 in the 2300 block of Burlington Rd in Muscatine. Authorities say a 2015 Volkswagen, driven by 39-year-old Daniel Owen Lincoln of Muscatine, was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when it crossed the center line and struck a westbound 1995 Chevrolet head-on.
The impact left both vehicles disabled in the roadway. Emergency crews responded immediately, including Fruitland and Letts Fire Departments, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, and Iowa State Patrol.
Daniel Lincoln was seriously injured in the crash but was wearing a seatbelt. He was airlifted by AirCare to the University of Iowa Hospitals for emergency treatment. Authorities noted that his life was likely saved due to his use of a seatbelt.
The driver of the Chevrolet, whose name has not been released pending family notification, died at the scene. No additional vehicles were involved.
The Iowa State Patrol stated that charges are pending as the investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wish Daniel Lincoln a full and swift recovery.
Fatal Head-On Collisions in Iowa
Tragic crashes like the one that occurred on Burlington Rd in Muscatine demonstrate the extreme danger posed by high-speed travel and lane departures on two-lane rural roads. When a vehicle crosses the center line—whether due to distraction, excessive speed, or loss of control—the risk of a head-on collision is high, and the consequences are often fatal.
Burlington Rd serves as a connector for residents and commuters in Muscatine County. While not heavily trafficked compared to highways, rural roads like this often lack barriers or wide shoulders, giving drivers very little room to recover from sudden errors. The force of a head-on impact at high speed often results in catastrophic injuries or death, especially when evasive action isn’t possible.
The survival of Daniel Lincoln, aided by seatbelt use and rapid air transport, highlights the importance of safety equipment and immediate emergency response. However, for the family of the deceased, the loss is irreplaceable. The pending investigation will determine whether additional factors such as impairment, mechanical failure, or reckless driving were involved.
Families affected by fatal crashes may face not only emotional hardship but also legal and financial burdens. In Iowa, wrongful death claims and injury-related legal remedies exist for victims and their families when negligence or unsafe driving plays a role.
