New Bedford, MA (July 3, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle crash on the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge claimed the life of a 41-year-old man and injured another driver Wednesday morning. The collision occurred around 11:00 AM on Route 6, drawing a large emergency response from area first responders.
Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, a convertible lost control while crossing the bridge and collided head-on with a pickup truck. The convertible sustained catastrophic front-end damage, and its driver, identified as Gregory Crook McGuire of New Bedford, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The 26-year-old male driver of the pickup truck also sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances leading to the crash.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Gregory Crook McGuire during this difficult time.
Bridge Safety and Sudden Loss of Control
Bridge crossings, particularly in coastal regions like New Bedford, pose unique driving hazards. Narrow lanes, elevation changes, and shifting road conditions can all contribute to sudden vehicle instability. While the exact cause of this crash remains under investigation, initial reports suggest the convertible lost control during the bridge crossing.
Massachusetts highway safety data indicates that bridge and overpass crashes, while less frequent, often result in more severe outcomes due to confined lanes and limited space for evasive action. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, avoid distractions, and maintain control—especially during weather-related or high-temperature bridge closures like the one recently reported in the area.
For those impacted by serious crashes, securing medical support, documenting the scene, and exploring legal rights are vital steps. Families coping with loss may also seek compassionate support and resources to assist during the recovery process.
