New Haven, CT (August 7, 2025) – A man who was struck by a vehicle while crossing Foxon Boulevard Wednesday night has died from his injuries, according to the New Haven Police Department.
Emergency responders were called to the 200 block of Foxon Blvd at approximately 10:13 p.m. following reports of a serious pedestrian accident. Upon arrival, paramedics and police located 58-year-old Jaime Melendez-Martinez, of New Haven, who had been critically injured in the collision.
Investigators believe Melendez-Martinez was crossing the boulevard from the Walmart parking lot when he was hit by an eastbound vehicle heading toward Quinnipiac Avenue. Authorities noted that he was outside of the marked crosswalk at the time of the incident.
Emergency crews transported the victim to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
According to police, the driver involved in the crash initially fled the scene but later turned themselves in by going to the New Haven Police Department to report the incident. The driver’s identity has not yet been released, and no charges have been announced.
The New Haven Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the fatal collision.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jaime Melendez-Martinez during this incredibly difficult time.
Fatal Pedestrian Crashes in Connecticut
The tragic death of Jaime Melendez-Martinez on Foxon Boulevard highlights a serious and growing issue in Connecticut and across the country: pedestrian safety. Incidents involving pedestrians are often deadly, especially on major roads like Foxon Blvd, where traffic volumes are high, lighting can be limited at night, and crosswalk access may be inconsistent.
Wednesday night’s crash raises significant concerns about driver awareness and pedestrian vulnerability in commercial corridors. While preliminary reports suggest the victim was outside the designated crosswalk, the fact that the driver initially fled the scene complicates the legal and moral dimensions of the case.
Pedestrian fatalities in Connecticut have been steadily rising in recent years, particularly in urban areas like New Haven. Many of these deaths occur at night, when visibility is reduced and drivers may be less attentive. Locations near large retail stores, such as Walmart, often have heavy foot traffic but insufficient pedestrian infrastructure, creating hazardous conditions for people crossing on foot.
