New Orleans, LA (January 31, 2026) – A Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy tragically lost his life Friday morning during a funeral escort assignment in New Orleans. The fatal crash occurred around 11:40 a.m. on January 30 in the 9200 block of Airline Highway.
Authorities identified the fallen deputy as 41-year-old Christopher Paul Ohlmeyer of River Ridge. Deputy Ohlmeyer was a 16-year veteran of law enforcement, including 14 years with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. He was married and the father of two children.
According to officials, Deputy Ohlmeyer was on motorcycle duty as part of an off-duty funeral escort when he was involved in a collision with a sedan. He suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The driver of the sedan was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, though their condition has not been publicly released.
Because the crash occurred within New Orleans city limits, the New Orleans Police Department is leading the investigation. Authorities are collecting surveillance footage, vehicle data, drone imagery, and other evidence to help reconstruct the accident and determine the events leading up to the crash.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the day as a heartbreaking loss for both law enforcement agencies, adding that both departments are committed to supporting the deputy’s family and honoring his years of service.
Sheriff Joseph Lopinto of Jefferson Parish, currently out of town, is expected to return soon to assist in leading the department through this difficult time. Officials have asked for privacy for Deputy Ohlmeyer’s loved ones as they grieve.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Christopher Paul Ohlmeyer. His dedication and service to the community will not be forgotten.
