Newark, DE (May 22, 2025) – A traffic accident with injuries was reported Thursday afternoon on the northbound side of I-95 at the toll plaza near the Maryland-Delaware state line. The collision occurred on the left side of the cash lanes and caused delays for drivers crossing into Delaware until it was cleared by early afternoon.
According to DelDOT updates and images from the scene, emergency crews responded quickly to assist injured individuals and control traffic around the crash site. At least one vehicle sustained visible damage in the incident. Paramedics were observed treating occupants at the scene, and while injuries were confirmed, the total number and severity have not been publicly detailed.
By 1:55 PM, DelDOT confirmed that the scene had been cleared and the previously blocked left-side cash lanes were fully reopened. Traffic resumed normal flow, though backups persisted for a short time afterward due to residual congestion.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No identifying details about the individuals involved have been released at this time.
We send our best wishes to the injured parties for a full and swift recovery.
Toll Plaza Accidents in Delaware
Toll plazas, such as the one on I-95 at the MD/DE state line, are among the most complex and high-risk driving environments on the interstate system. Thursday’s crash underscores the heightened risk drivers face when navigating between E-ZPass and cash lanes—especially during mid-day traffic when sudden stops and lane changes are common.
Newark’s position near this state line crossing makes it a major conduit for both commercial freight and personal travel. The cash lanes at this toll site frequently experience stop-and-go traffic, where even small misjudgments in speed or spacing can result in serious crashes.
Delaware transportation authorities continue to make improvements at toll facilities, including clearer lane indicators and advance signage. Still, safe merging behavior and reduced speeds are critical in preventing collisions at these choke points.
Victims of toll plaza accidents often encounter more than immediate injury—they may face long-term health issues, lost income, and insurance disputes. Ensuring that proper care and documentation are in place from the start is key to recovery.
