Newton, MO (May 15, 2025) – Emergency responders were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Missouri Highway 43, approximately two miles south of Joplin, late Wednesday evening.
First responders, including paramedics, assessed and treated individuals hurt in the crash. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on May 14, 2025, and involved two vehicles traveling northbound on MO-43. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s initial report, a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse driven by a 44-year-old male from Carthage failed to slow for traffic ahead and rear-ended a 2014 Toyota Camry driven by a 65-year-old female from Seneca.
The impact resulted in moderate damage to the Traverse and totaled the Camry. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Comers Towing. The driver of the Traverse sustained moderate injuries and was transported by emergency medical services to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. The driver of the Camry was not listed as injured in the initial crash report.
Troop D is overseeing the investigation and has not yet released additional details regarding contributing factors such as distraction, speed, or visibility. The collision serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by following too closely or failing to maintain safe braking distances. We extend our best wishes for a full recovery to the injured party.
Rear-End Collisions in Missouri
Rear-end crashes, like the one reported south of Joplin on MO-43, are among the most common types of traffic collisions in Missouri and across the nation. These incidents often occur due to driver inattention, distracted driving, or sudden stops in traffic flow, especially on highways and high-speed routes like MO-43.
In this case, both vehicles were heading northbound when the Chevrolet Traverse struck the back of the Toyota Camry. While rear-end crashes are typically viewed as less severe, they can still result in significant injuries, particularly when the at-fault vehicle fails to decelerate in time. The driver of the Traverse suffered moderate injuries and required EMS transport to a local trauma center, highlighting the physical toll such crashes can take.
Highways around the Joplin area experience a mix of local and through traffic, making them susceptible to sudden slowdowns, especially during evening hours when commuter traffic is heavier. As such, it’s essential for drivers to maintain a safe following distance and remain vigilant for changes in speed ahead.
For older drivers like the 65-year-old woman in this incident, the trauma from a collision, even without reported injuries, can have long-term effects. It’s also important for all involved parties to document any symptoms that emerge in the hours or days following a crash, as injuries such as whiplash or soft tissue damage may not present immediately.
Those injured in rear-end crashes should seek prompt medical attention and consider reaching out to local support services to understand their rights and responsibilities, especially in terms of medical expenses, insurance claims, and recovery resources.
No matter how straightforward a collision may seem, securing proper documentation and care is essential for ensuring long-term health and peace of mind.
