Norfolk, VA (August 26, 2025) – A serious multi-vehicle collision occurred Monday morning on eastbound I-64 near Exit 284A, just over the Virginia Beach Boulevard bridge. The crash involved four vehicles and left at least two to three individuals injured, with one vehicle reportedly facing the wrong direction in westbound lanes.
The incident took place shortly before noon and prompted a large-scale response from Norfolk City Fire and EMS, including Ladder 14, Medic 10, and other emergency units. Dispatch audio also noted complications from a separate, earlier accident nearby, which had caused a power outage at the intersection of Center Dr and Kempsville Rd. Dominion Energy was already on site working to restore service.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, where officers confirmed that multiple people were hurt and required medical attention. First responders triaged victims at the scene and monitored the complex traffic situation resulting from the wrong-way vehicle and the ongoing power disruption nearby.
Traffic along I-64 eastbound was slowed significantly during the emergency response. Despite the severity of the crash and the risks posed by the vehicle facing against traffic, no life-threatening injuries have been reported at this time. The crash is currently under active investigation.
We extend our thoughts to the injured and all affected by this major collision.
Multi-Vehicle Accidents on Virginia Interstates
Accidents involving several vehicles, like Monday’s four-car crash on I-64 near Exit 284A, highlight the dangers that exist on Virginia’s major highways—particularly near interchanges like the one connecting I-64 and I-264 in Norfolk. These areas see extremely high traffic volumes and fast-changing traffic patterns, which can contribute to pileups when just one mistake occurs.
In this case, the collision had multiple complicating factors: a wrong-way vehicle, injuries to several people, and a simultaneous infrastructure issue with nearby traffic lights. Responders from Norfolk Fire and EMS had to coordinate care for multiple patients while managing scene safety and keeping highway lanes clear for passing vehicles.
Wrong-way incidents are particularly dangerous. They often result from disorientation, reckless driving, or missed signage, and they raise the likelihood of head-on impacts. Emergency officials acted quickly to prevent further harm while securing the area for ongoing investigation.
Victims of multi-car highway accidents can face not only physical trauma but also legal and logistical complications. When several drivers, vehicles, or entities are involved, understanding liability and seeking fair compensation becomes more difficult. In these moments, having access to reliable information and support is crucial.
