Norfolk, VA (May 19, 2025) – A tragic collision claimed the life of a woman Saturday evening in Norfolk after a suspected DUI crash on I-64 near the Northampton Blvd exit. Virginia State Police confirmed that 70-year-old Paulette Angela Chambers died at the scene after the vehicle she was in was struck by a speeding car driven by a man now facing serious criminal charges.
The crash occurred around 6:35 p.m. when a 2005 BMW, driven by 25-year-old Devon Acevero, was traveling eastbound on I-64 at a high rate of speed. Acevero lost control of the car, veered off the roadway, and struck a jersey wall. The impact caused the BMW to careen across all lanes of traffic before colliding with a 2021 Jeep Cherokee.
The Jeep, which then rolled off the road, was driven by Steven Wayne Boyle. He was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Chambers, identified as Boyle’s passenger and mother-in-law, tragically died at the scene due to the severity of her injuries.
Virginia State Police have charged Acevero with DUI Manslaughter. He is currently being held at the Norfolk City Jail. The eastbound lanes of I-64 have since reopened following the investigation and cleanup efforts.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Paulette Angela Chambers, and we wish a full recovery to those injured in this senseless tragedy.
