Oak Park Heights, MN (September 24, 2025) – One man was killed and another driver injured in a tragic two-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon on westbound Highway 36 at Greeley St in Washington County. The crash involved a rear-end impact and rollover, prompting a full-scale emergency response.
The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m., when a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 89-year-old Daniel Patrick Powers of New Richmond, WI, was traveling westbound on Highway 36. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the Jeep rear-ended a 2019 Ram pickup truck driven by 58-year-old Paulette Marie Hoy of Stillwater, MN. Following the impact, the Jeep rolled over, resulting in fatal injuries to Mr. Powers.
Emergency responders transported Mr. Powers to Regions Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Reports confirm that he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and no alcohol was involved. The driver of the pickup, Ms. Hoy, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and did not require hospital transport.
The roadway was dry at the time of the collision, and the incident remains under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol with assistance from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Powers and send our thoughts to Ms. Hoy for a full and peaceful recovery.
Rollover and Rear-End Collisions in Minnesota
Tuesday’s fatal crash on Highway 36 near Greeley St illustrates the often-deadly nature of high-speed rear-end collisions, particularly when followed by vehicle rollovers. In Minnesota, rollover crashes—especially those involving older drivers—continue to be a leading cause of severe and fatal injuries on highways.
Rear-end impacts can destabilize vehicles quickly, especially SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which are more susceptible to rollover when struck or braked abruptly. Despite modern safety features, the physics of such crashes often result in significant trauma—particularly for elderly drivers who may be more vulnerable to severe internal or head injuries.
While seat belt use plays a vital role in reducing fatal outcomes, rollover dynamics and impact speed can still result in life-threatening harm. Roadway conditions in this case were clear and dry, suggesting that driver attentiveness, traffic flow, or possible delayed reaction may have played a role.
This tragic event also reminds drivers of all ages to maintain safe following distances and remain alert, particularly when navigating busy stretches of highway like those in Oak Park Heights. Seniors and their families should consider periodic evaluations of driving capabilities, especially when long-distance or high-speed driving is involved.
For families affected by fatal collisions, the aftermath can feel overwhelming—emotionally and logistically. Navigating investigations, insurance claims, and accessing grief support are all part of a difficult journey that requires both information and compassion.
