Oakland, CA (August 24, 2025) – A fatal collision was reported early Saturday morning on I-880 South near the Hegenberger Rd off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The deadly crash occurred around 3:48 AM and involved at least two vehicles, one of which struck the rear of a semi-truck.
CHP dispatch logs indicate that multiple vehicles were damaged in the collision, with at least one vehicle blocking lanes 1, 3, and 4 of the freeway. Witnesses, including an EMT who stopped at the scene, reported that one individual was unresponsive. Emergency medical teams confirmed the fatality a short time later.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. A SigAlert was issued at approximately 4:07 AM, with all southbound lanes of I-880 closed near Hegenberger Rd while investigators documented the crash site and tow operators worked to remove heavily damaged vehicles. By 6:30 AM, lanes were reopened after evidence was collected and the scene was cleared.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased pending family notification. The investigation is ongoing to determine the sequence of events, including whether speed, impairment, or driver fatigue may have contributed to the crash.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life in this tragic accident.
Fatal Crashes in California
The crash on I-880 near Hegenberger Rd illustrates the devastating consequences of high-speed collisions on California’s freeways. When large commercial vehicles, such as semi-trucks, are involved in rear-end impacts, the results are often catastrophic due to the size and weight difference between vehicles. In this case, at least one victim lost their life, and the freeway was shut down for hours as authorities worked the scene.
Oakland and the greater East Bay area see a high frequency of serious collisions, particularly along I-880, which serves as a critical corridor for commuter and commercial traffic. Nighttime crashes, such as this one at 3:48 AM, often carry elevated risks due to driver fatigue, lower visibility, and a higher likelihood of impairment.
When fatalities occur, families are left grappling with grief as well as sudden financial burdens, including funeral costs, lost income, and medical expenses leading up to the tragedy. California law provides avenues for families to pursue support and compensation, but the process can be complex and emotionally draining.
It is important for drivers to remember the dangers of fatigue and distraction, especially on major freeways. Even a momentary lapse in attention can result in irreversible outcomes.
