Oakland, CA (September 23, 2025) – A collision on the westbound 580 Freeway in Oakland resulted in major injuries Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. at the Grand Ave off-ramp.
Authorities reported that two vehicles were involved in the incident. Preliminary information suggests the crash occurred when one driver, who was reportedly waiting in traffic, may have fallen asleep and failed to notice when vehicles ahead had moved forward.
As a result, the vehicle remained stationary in an active lane and was struck by another car. The impact caused significant damage to at least one of the vehicles.
Oakland Fire Department personnel and paramedics responded to the scene and provided aid. At least one person sustained major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Their current condition has not been disclosed.
Officials closed off the affected area while emergency crews worked to assess the situation and clear the roadway. The investigation into the exact cause of the crash is ongoing.
