Oakland, MD (January 7, 2026) – One person is dead and several others were hospitalized following a crash involving an ambulance Tuesday evening near the 3000 block of Maryland Highway outside Oakland, according to the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office.
The collision occurred on January 6 just before 6:00 p.m. Deputies arriving at the scene discovered that a Nissan Altima had collided with a Healthnet Aero Medical Transport ambulance. Roger Lee Paugh, 78, of Swanton, was pronounced dead as a result of the crash.
The driver and additional occupants of the ambulance were transported to Garrett Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Their current conditions have not been released.
Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department, Southern Garrett EMS, Bittinger EMS, Garrett County Emergency Services, and the Maryland State Highway Administration. The Garrett County Sheriff’s Office accident reconstruction team is actively investigating the incident to determine the cause.
