Risks of Pedestrian Crashes on Interstate Highways
Pedestrian fatalities on interstate highways like I-85 are especially alarming due to the extreme dangers posed by high-speed traffic. Unlike urban streets, interstates are not designed for pedestrian use, and visibility is often limited—particularly in the early morning hours when lighting is low and driver alertness may be reduced.
In some cases, individuals on the highway may be stranded motorists, those experiencing a mental health crisis, or pedestrians attempting to cross multiple lanes of traffic. Regardless of the reason, such environments present critical risks to anyone on foot.
Drivers are urged to remain vigilant, especially during nighttime or early morning hours, and to report any pedestrian sightings on highways to authorities immediately. Avoiding distractions and maintaining a safe speed can provide critical reaction time in unexpected situations.
