Oldham County, TX (September 11, 2025) – A devastating head-on collision along Interstate 40 just west of Vega claimed the lives of three individuals from Arizona. The crash, which occurred around 6:35 p.m., involved multiple commercial vehicles and a family traveling westbound in an SUV.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident began when a 2024 Volvo truck tractor towing a semi-trailer veered out of its eastbound lane. The vehicle moved onto the improved shoulder and struck the rear of a parked, unoccupied Freightliner semi-truck. Following that impact, the Volvo continued through the median and into oncoming traffic — directly into the path of a westbound 2022 Honda Pilot.
Inside the Honda Pilot were three family members from Mesa, AZ: 62-year-old Ronald Momyer, 61-year-old Julie Momyer, and an 11-year-old boy. The impact of the crash resulted in a catastrophic head-on collision. Tragically, Ronald and Julie Momyer were both pronounced dead at the scene. The young boy was initially transported to a nearby hospital and later airlifted to Lubbock, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Volvo truck tractor was not reported to be injured. Authorities have stated the crash is still under active investigation, with further information expected as officials examine roadway conditions, mechanical factors, and driver actions.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the Momyer family and all those affected by this tragic event.
Head-On Collisions in Texas
Crashes like the one west of Vega on I-40 serve as sobering reminders of the dangers posed by high-speed highways and the potential devastation of head-on impacts. In rural stretches of Texas like Oldham County, highways serve as lifelines for both long-haul trucking and private travel. But when a vehicle crosses the median at highway speeds — particularly a fully loaded semi-truck — the results are often deadly.
This collision, involving multiple commercial vehicles and a family SUV, is a particularly heartbreaking example. The fact that a parked Freightliner was first struck only adds to the complexity of the incident. With no protective barriers separating lanes in some rural areas, a single lane deviation can result in life-altering consequences. The wide median that separates eastbound and westbound traffic on I-40, while typical in Texas, often provides only limited prevention when control is lost at speed.
Emergency responders in Oldham County are trained for major crash response, but even with prompt action, the severity of head-on crashes often means fatalities occur before aid can be rendered. In this case, two lives were lost at the scene, and a young victim died later from his injuries — a tragic sequence that families, responders, and the broader community will feel for years.
For the surviving loved ones of those lost, the road to recovery includes not only emotional and psychological healing but also a complex legal and procedural aftermath. Investigations involving commercial trucking companies, liability questions, and insurance processes can be overwhelming.
For those facing such tragic circumstances, help is available to understand the process and find a way forward.
