Omao, HI (September 14, 2025) – A rear-end collision early Saturday morning in Omao left one man seriously injured after a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) was struck by a pickup truck on Kaumualii Hwy near the Omao Track. The crash occurred around 6:00 a.m. and caused significant disruption along the westbound lanes.
According to local officials, a 60-year-old man was operating a Kawasaki UTV westbound when his vehicle was struck from behind by a 2004 Toyota pickup truck driven by a 20-year-old man. The impact forced the UTV into a roadside embankment where it flipped onto its side. The older driver was ejected from the vehicle as a result.
Paramedics quickly arrived on scene and transported the injured man to Wilcox Medical Center. He remains in serious but stable condition. The driver of the pickup truck was not reported to have sustained any injuries.
Kaumualii Hwy was shut down for approximately two hours following the crash as law enforcement conducted their on-scene investigation. The investigation remains open.
Our thoughts are with the injured man and his loved ones, and we hope for a full and swift recovery.
UTV Accidents and Highway Safety in Hawaii
The crash in Omao highlights the particular risks faced by UTV operators when traveling on or near state highways like Kaumualii. Unlike traditional passenger vehicles, utility terrain vehicles offer minimal protection in high-impact scenarios—especially in rear-end collisions where the smaller vehicle bears the brunt of the force.
Kaumualii Hwy, a primary corridor on Kauai, serves both local and commercial traffic. While often scenic, its mix of vehicle types—from agricultural equipment to passenger vehicles—can increase crash risk during early morning hours when visibility is low and traffic patterns shift.
In this incident, the ejection of the UTV driver led to serious injuries—underscoring the dangers of operating lighter recreational or work-use vehicles alongside heavier trucks. Despite no signs of speeding or impairment, the mechanical mismatch between the two vehicles created a dangerous dynamic that could have been fatal.
Recovery from such injuries often requires extended hospitalization and follow-up care. It also highlights the importance of raising public awareness about the proper use and placement of UTVs on public roadways, as well as the development of enhanced safety infrastructure to accommodate varied types of vehicles.
For those affected by vehicle collisions in Hawaii, early intervention is key. Accessing medical care promptly, documenting the incident thoroughly, and seeking the right legal or financial guidance can make a significant difference in the recovery journey.
