Fatal Roadside Collisions in Pennsylvania and the Risks of Parked Trailers
The fatal crash on Route 222 in Ontelaunee Township highlights a critical safety issue on Pennsylvania highways—collisions involving parked or disabled vehicles near active travel lanes. In this case, the car’s path under the trailer resulted in a catastrophic entrapment, a tragic scenario that underscores the importance of safe roadside parking protocols and alert driving.
Parked trailers, especially those positioned close to the roadway, pose major visibility and collision risks—particularly during early morning hours when lighting conditions may impair driver perception. Combined with high-speed travel zones like Allentown Pike, even a brief loss of control can lead to devastating consequences.
The investigation by Berks County authorities will likely examine factors such as the trailer’s placement, vehicle speed, roadway conditions, and driver behavior. These findings may also inform future recommendations for roadside safety improvements.
