Ottawa County, MI (April 24, 2025) – A 65-year-old Jenison man was seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital Thursday morning following a crash in the 9900 block of Port Sheldon Street, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. The crash, which involved two vehicles, occurred just before 8:00 a.m., prompting a full emergency response.
Authorities said the older man was pulling out of his driveway when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old Jenison resident. Emergency crews arrived swiftly and determined that the 65-year-old had sustained serious injuries, necessitating air medical transport to a regional trauma center.
The second driver was also injured in the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
Port Sheldon Street was temporarily shut down while first responders managed the scene, coordinated patient care, and began an initial investigation into the cause of the crash. The roadway has since been reopened, though the incident remains under review by the sheriff’s office.
We extend our sincere well wishes to both individuals injured, and we hope for a full recovery for the man who remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
Driveway-Related Crashes and Rural Road Risks in Michigan
Crashes that occur as drivers pull out of residential driveways—particularly along rural or semi-rural roads like Port Sheldon Street—are often sudden and severe. These types of accidents frequently happen due to limited visibility, speed of oncoming traffic, or misjudgment of safe entry into the roadway.
Rural routes in Ottawa County, while less congested than urban roads, often carry higher-speed vehicles, and curves or tree lines may reduce sight distance for drivers pulling out from private properties. In this case, the crash caused injuries to both parties, with the older driver suffering trauma significant enough to require helicopter evacuation.
Medical airlifts are generally reserved for cases involving potential head trauma, internal bleeding, or multi-system injuries—meaning this crash may have long-term implications for the victim’s health and quality of life.
For victims of crashes like these, recovery involves more than medical care. The process often includes physical rehabilitation, working through insurance complexities, and understanding rights under Michigan’s no-fault insurance system.
