Ottawa, KS (August 15, 2025) – A deadly crash between two semitrailers claimed one life and left another driver seriously injured on Thursday morning on Interstate 35 in Franklin County. The collision occurred around 10:30 a.m. just south of Sand Creek Rd, approximately two miles northeast of Ottawa.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2023 Freightliner traveling north in the outside lane drifted into the inside lane, crossed the grassy median, and entered the southbound lanes. A southbound 2020 Freightliner attempted to avoid the collision by moving into the grass on the west side of I-35, but was struck by the northbound truck.
The impact caused the 2023 Freightliner to come to rest in the west ditch, where it became fully engulfed in flames. The driver, identified as 29-year-old Zachary Williams of Liberty, Tenn., was pronounced dead at the scene. It is not yet known if Williams was wearing his seat belt.
The driver of the 2020 Freightliner, 52-year-old Thomas Romero of Albuquerque, N.M., sustained serious injuries and was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. Authorities confirmed that Romero was wearing his seat belt.
Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles. The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family of Zachary Williams, and we wish Thomas Romero a full recovery.
Semi Crossover Collisions in Kansas
Crossover crashes involving large commercial trucks are among the most dangerous incidents on highways like I-35. The combination of vehicle size, high speeds, and head-on impact potential often leads to catastrophic outcomes. Factors such as driver fatigue, medical emergencies, or mechanical failures can contribute to a truck crossing the median.
Kansas highways see significant commercial truck traffic, and safety measures like median barriers, proper lane discipline, and alert driving are critical in preventing these tragedies. When collisions occur, victims and their families often face long recoveries, financial strain, and complex insurance claims.
