Palm Coast, FL (September 24, 2025) – A deadly wrong-way crash late Tuesday night claimed the life of a 76-year-old Melbourne man and seriously injured another driver on US-1 in Flagler County. The collision occurred just before midnight, south of Seminole Woods Blvd in Palm Coast, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Troopers report that the 76-year-old was driving his vehicle south in the northbound lanes of US-1 when he struck another vehicle head-on. The impact was severe, and the wrong-way driver—who was not wearing a seatbelt—was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the northbound vehicle, a 63-year-old man from Bunnell, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition has not been publicly updated.
A third vehicle, an SUV traveling behind the Bunnell man’s car, was also involved. It rear-ended the second vehicle as the crash unfolded. Fortunately, the driver of the SUV was not injured, FHP confirmed.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the Melbourne man to enter the wrong side of the divided highway. Toxicology results are pending, and the Florida Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation.
We send our deepest condolences to the family of the man who lost his life and extend heartfelt wishes for a full recovery to the injured driver.
Wrong-Way Collisions in Florida
Wrong-way crashes are among the most violent and deadly types of roadway accidents, particularly on divided highways like US-1. These incidents often occur late at night or in low-visibility conditions, and they typically offer little to no opportunity for the oncoming driver to react or avoid the impact.
Florida has seen a troubling number of wrong-way crashes in recent years, with older drivers and nighttime travel often cited as contributing factors. In this case, the crash occurred just before midnight—an hour when visibility is reduced and driver alertness tends to decline. The absence of a seatbelt only increased the fatality risk for the Melbourne man involved.
The driver from Bunnell, who was seriously injured, now faces what may be a long and difficult recovery. Serious collisions like this often result in lasting trauma—both physical and emotional—and may require extensive medical care, time off work, and long-term rehabilitation. In multi-vehicle collisions, insurance complications can further add to the stress of recovery.
For those injured in wrong-way or head-on collisions, seeking immediate medical attention is only the first step. Connecting with local support systems—including legal assistance and rehabilitation resources—can make a meaningful difference during the recovery process.
