Palm Coast, FL (August 8, 2025) – A fatal pedestrian collision early Friday morning on Interstate 95 in Flagler County claimed the life of a 20-year-old man from New York City. The crash occurred near mile marker 289 in the northbound lanes, just outside Palm Coast, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Troopers responded to the scene shortly after 3:00 a.m. and found that the man had been struck by two SUVs—a Nissan Rogue and a Ford Edge—after stepping into the roadway from the outside shoulder. The drivers, one from Virginia and the other from Pennsylvania, were unable to avoid the collision. Both remained at the scene and were uninjured.
Authorities stated that the pedestrian was standing on the shoulder moments before entering the active travel lane, for reasons that remain unknown. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The crash caused significant delays for early morning commuters as northbound lanes were partially closed for several hours during the investigation. By approximately 9:00 a.m., all lanes had been reopened.
Our deepest sympathies are with the family and loved ones of the young man who lost his life in this tragic incident.
Pedestrian Fatalities on Florida Highways
Incidents like Friday’s tragic death on I-95 near Palm Coast emphasize the severe dangers pedestrians face on Florida’s high-speed roadways. Interstates are particularly hazardous for foot traffic due to fast-moving vehicles, low visibility during early hours, and limited safe access for pedestrians.
Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities each year. Many of these incidents occur in low-light conditions or when individuals attempt to cross or walk along major highways, where drivers have little time to react. Even well-intentioned attempts to walk to safety can result in devastating outcomes when visibility or driver awareness is limited.
In response, state transportation officials have ramped up efforts to address pedestrian safety by improving lighting, installing more fencing and barriers to deter foot traffic, and launching awareness campaigns for both drivers and pedestrians. Still, tragedies like this remind us that unpredictable situations can arise at any time.
Families affected by such incidents often face emotional grief and logistical challenges—especially when accidents occur far from home, as in this case involving a New York resident in Florida. Access to accurate information, legal support, and local resources becomes critical during these overwhelming times.
