Pasco, WA (August 26, 2025) – A tragic collision occurred Sunday morning just north of Pasco, leaving one man dead and multiple others injured. According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the crash took place on SR-395 near the intersection with Crestloch, involving two vehicles traveling in opposite directions.
The incident happened when the driver of a southbound vehicle attempted to make a left turn onto eastbound Crestloch. During the turn, the vehicle was struck by a northbound car traveling on SR-395. The impact was severe, and both vehicles were completely destroyed in the crash.
WSP confirmed that 76-year-old Mark R. Wallum, a passenger in the turning vehicle, tragically died at the scene. Two other occupants from the same vehicle were seriously injured and were taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the second vehicle was also transported to the same hospital, and all individuals involved were reported to have suffered injuries of varying severity.
Troopers noted that alcohol and drugs were not contributing factors in the crash and that all parties were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. An investigation is underway to determine if other elements—such as visibility, speed, or driver judgment—may have contributed to the fatal outcome.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Mark R. Wallum. We also send our best wishes for a full and swift recovery to those injured in this devastating incident.
Fatal Crashes in Washington State
The crash north of Pasco highlights the dangers that can arise at rural highway intersections, particularly along high-speed routes like SR-395. Left-turn collisions on major highways are among the most dangerous types of crashes, especially when vehicles must cross multiple lanes of traffic or when oncoming drivers have little time to react.
Intersections like Crestloch, situated outside of city limits, may lack the controlled signals or turn lanes often found in urban settings. This can lead to confusion or misjudgment when attempting to make a left turn across fast-moving traffic. Even when visibility seems clear, the speed differential on highways like SR-395 can result in high-impact collisions with deadly consequences.
The fact that both vehicles were totaled indicates a significant amount of force at the moment of impact. In such crashes, seatbelt use—while critical to survival—cannot always prevent fatal injuries, especially for older passengers who may be more vulnerable to trauma.
This incident also brings attention to the importance of reviewing traffic control measures at known risk points along rural highways. Whether through improved signage, added turn lanes, or better lighting, infrastructure enhancements can help reduce the likelihood of similar tragedies.
For families impacted by fatal crashes, the emotional burden is often compounded by legal and financial stress. In cases where a loved one is lost due to a traffic collision, navigating insurance processes, liability questions, and long-term care needs can be overwhelming without the right support system.
