Pearl City, HI (September 22, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash on the H-1 freeway westbound near the Waimano exit left four people injured late Sunday night, including two who remain in critical condition, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
The collision occurred around 10:41 p.m. on September 21. Investigators reported that a 24-year-old man traveling in lane one sideswiped a 28-year-old motorist who had stopped in lane two because of an unrelated accident. The impact caused the driver to strike three pedestrians — men aged 51, 35, and 24 — who were standing in the roadway. The vehicle then sideswiped a parked, unattended car nearby.
Emergency Medical Services transported the 51-year-old and 35-year-old pedestrians to the hospital in critical condition. The 28-year-old motorist and the 24-year-old pedestrian were taken in serious condition. The 24-year-old driver remained at the scene but declined medical treatment.
At this time, it is not known whether speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the crash. The Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, is actively investigating.
Our hearts go out to those injured in this devastating collision, and we hope for the best possible recovery for everyone affected.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes and Pedestrian Risks in Hawaii
Sunday night’s collision near Pearl City highlights the serious dangers that multi-vehicle crashes pose, particularly when pedestrians are present on or near major freeways. The involvement of both stationary vehicles and people standing in the roadway created a highly dangerous situation, one that led to catastrophic injuries.
H-1 is Oahu’s busiest freeway, serving as a critical artery for commuters and travelers across the island. Accidents on this stretch often result in lane blockages and secondary collisions, especially when motorists stop in live lanes without adequate visibility. Pedestrians who exit their vehicles after a crash face extreme risk, as drivers may have little time to react at freeway speeds.
The injuries sustained in this incident reflect the severity of freeway crashes. Two of the victims remain in critical condition, demonstrating how quickly lives can change when collisions involve both vehicles and pedestrians in confined, high-speed corridors. For survivors, recovery may involve long-term hospitalization, rehabilitation, and emotional challenges.
Authorities continue to emphasize that drivers who are involved in crashes on freeways should, whenever possible, remain inside their vehicles with hazard lights activated until it is safe to exit. Pedestrians on highways remain particularly vulnerable, and incidents like this one underscore the need for continued public awareness about roadside safety.
