Shoulder Merge Collisions on Missouri Interstates
Crashes involving vehicles re-entering traffic from the shoulder, such as this one on I-155, are especially dangerous due to speed differences and limited reaction time for other drivers. These incidents often result in high-impact collisions and serious injuries, particularly when seatbelt use is lacking.
On high-speed routes like I-155, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) advises drivers to only stop on the shoulder in emergencies and to exercise extreme caution when merging back into traffic. Proper signaling, checking blind spots, and yielding to oncoming vehicles are critical to preventing tragedies.
Failure to yield while merging from the shoulder can carry significant legal and financial consequences. Victims may face long-term recovery, unexpected medical bills, and challenges dealing with insurance companies. In such cases, legal support may help clarify rights and responsibilities.
