Pemiscot County, MO (August 22, 2025) – Two 17-year-old drivers were injured on Thursday morning in a rear-end collision on County Road 524, approximately five miles west of Caruthersville. The crash occurred around 10:45 a.m. and was investigated by CPL J. P. Lweis of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop E.
According to official crash data, the incident involved a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu (Vehicle 1) and a 2012 Dodge Charger (Vehicle 2), both traveling eastbound on County Rd 524. The crash happened when the Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 17-year-old male from Caruthersville, struck the rear of the Dodge Charger, also driven by a 17-year-old male from the same town.
Emergency personnel were not required to transport the injured teens, as both drivers sustained minor injuries and were taken by private vehicle to Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti for treatment. Notably, the driver of the Malibu was not wearing a safety device at the time of the crash, while the Charger driver was reportedly buckled.
Both vehicles sustained moderate damage and were removed from the scene by Sullivan’s Towing. Authorities have not released additional details regarding potential citations or contributing factors.
We extend our well wishes to both young drivers as they recover from their injuries.
Teen Driver Collisions in Rural Missouri
Thursday’s crash near Caruthersville highlights a common issue on Missouri’s rural roadways, rear-end collisions involving young drivers. These types of crashes often occur due to following too closely, distracted driving, or failure to recognize slowing traffic ahead. While typically less severe than high-speed highway crashes, even low-to-moderate impact collisions can result in injury and lasting consequences.
This incident is also a reminder of the importance of consistent seat belt use. The driver who was not restrained still suffered injuries, underscoring how even minor crashes can be dangerous without proper safety precautions. In 2024, Missouri continued to report that teens are among the least likely to wear seat belts regularly, despite being among the most vulnerable in crash scenarios.
County roads like CR 524 often have limited shoulders, no traffic signals, and unpredictable visibility due to natural terrain or farming equipment. These factors can increase the likelihood of rear-end crashes, particularly for inexperienced drivers.
For families and communities, education and early intervention remain key to reducing teen-involved crashes. Programs focusing on defensive driving skills, reaction time training, and peer influence awareness can help young drivers make safer choices behind the wheel.
In the aftermath of a collision, no matter how minor it may seem, it’s essential to seek proper medical care, assess vehicle damage, and understand legal and insurance implications. Even seemingly simple crashes can create complications without proper guidance.
