Penobscot County, ME (July 7, 2024) – A 17-year-old girl sustained serious injuries Sunday evening following a collision between a motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle at the intersection of Route 9 and Rooks Rd. Deputies from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene shortly after 5:30 p.m.

According to the official release, the crash occurred when a motorcycle, operated by a 49-year-old man from New York, attempted to pass an SUV. At the same time, the SUV began a left turn onto Rooks Rd, resulting in a direct collision between the two vehicles.

Emergency crews transported the motorcyclist to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with minor injuries. His 17-year-old daughter, who was riding as a passenger, was seriously hurt and also taken to the hospital for further treatment. Officials confirmed that both riders were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The occupants of the SUV were unharmed. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the incident.

Our thoughts are with the injured teen and her family, and we wish her a full and swift recovery.

Motorcycle Collisions in Maine

Crashes involving motorcycles often result in severe or life-altering injuries, particularly when passengers are involved. Sunday’s collision on Route 9 in Penobscot County highlights the specific dangers associated with passing maneuvers and intersection turns—two factors commonly linked to multi-vehicle motorcycle crashes.

In this incident, the attempted pass occurred just as the SUV initiated a left turn. These timing conflicts often result in limited reaction time for both drivers, especially on roadways without turning lanes or with limited visibility. Even when wearing helmets, motorcyclists and their passengers remain exposed to higher risk due to the lack of surrounding protection.

Teens involved in motorcycle crashes—whether as drivers or passengers—face additional risks, including longer recovery periods and emotional trauma. For families, dealing with medical decisions, insurance complexities, and legal implications adds further stress.

Maine law requires careful adherence to traffic procedures when passing, and all drivers must be alert to the actions of nearby vehicles—especially at intersections. When a crash like this occurs, law enforcement typically evaluates right-of-way, signaling, driver awareness, and vehicle positioning.

Those affected by motorcycle crashes are encouraged to document their injuries, keep track of medical expenses, and obtain a full police report to support recovery and potential claims.
