Pensacola, FL (August 29, 2025) – A 4-year-old child was airlifted to a nearby hospital Friday morning following a serious collision involving an electric bicycle and a sedan in Escambia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at the intersection of County Road 292A (Gulf Beach Hwy) and Bauer Rd. Authorities report that a sedan, driven by a 21-year-old Pensacola woman, was traveling eastbound on Gulf Beach Hwy when she attempted to make a left turn onto Bauer Rd. During the turn, the car crossed into the path of a westbound e-bike, operated by a 31-year-old Pensacola man who had the young girl riding as a passenger.
The front of the sedan struck the front of the e-bike, causing a high-impact crash that critically injured both the adult rider and the child. Both individuals were wearing helmets at the time of the collision.
Emergency medical crews responded swiftly. The child was flown by helicopter to a local hospital for urgent care, while the adult rider was transported by ambulance with critical injuries. The driver of the sedan was reportedly unharmed.
FHP continues to investigate the incident, including the driver’s failure to yield, which appears to have been the primary contributing factor.
Our thoughts are with the injured child and adult rider, and we hope for their full and rapid recovery.
E-Bike Collisions Involving Children in Florida
Friday’s crash in Pensacola highlights the growing concern around electric bicycle safety—especially when young children are involved as passengers. As e-bikes become more common for both recreation and transportation, Florida’s busy intersections, like Gulf Beach Hwy at Bauer Rd, pose significant hazards for riders who often lack the protection afforded by standard vehicles.
This crash was especially severe due to the failure of a turning driver to yield, one of the leading causes of bike-vehicle collisions in Florida. Even with helmets, e-bike riders—particularly those carrying young passengers—are at an increased risk of traumatic injury in direct vehicle impacts.
Children involved in such accidents often face more serious long-term health consequences due to their size and fragility. In this case, the decision to airlift the child underscores the urgency and severity of her condition. For families, these crashes result not only in immediate medical emergencies but also long and difficult paths to recovery.
Florida law allows injury victims—including minors—to pursue compensation when negligence is a factor. In cases involving critical injuries, timely documentation, witness statements, and expert medical evaluations are essential for building a strong case and securing support for long-term care needs.
