Phelps, NY (May 13, 2025) – A Sunday evening collision at a busy Phelps intersection resulted in serious injuries and multiple emergency transports, including one Mercy Flight airlift, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office. The two-vehicle crash occurred at the junction of County Road 6 and State Route 96 on May 11.
The crash took place when 18-year-old Destiny Robinson of Clifton Springs attempted to make a left turn and failed to yield the right of way to an oncoming eastbound vehicle, leading to a significant collision with a car driven by 19-year-old Marissa Ohearn of Waterloo.
Ohearn suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester via Mercy Flight. Her passenger, 18-year-old Mackenzie Shafer of Lyons, was also injured and transported by Phelps Ambulance to the same hospital for treatment. Robinson, the driver of the other vehicle, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Clifton Springs Hospital by Finger Lakes EMS.
Responders from the Oaks Corners Fire Department, Phelps EMS, and New York State Police assisted deputies at the scene, working efficiently to care for the injured and manage traffic in the crash area. The intersection was partially closed during the emergency response.
Robinson was cited for failure to yield the right of way while turning left. Additionally, Ohearn received a ticket for failure to wear a seat belt. Authorities noted that the crash remains under investigation.
We extend our heartfelt wishes to all three young women involved and hope for their full and timely recovery.
Intersection Accidents in New York
Crashes at intersections like County Rd 6 and State Rt 96 are unfortunately common in both rural and suburban regions of New York. Intersections are high-risk zones, especially when visibility is limited or driver misjudgment comes into play. In this case, a left turn without yielding led to a significant side-impact crash—one of the most dangerous types of collisions, particularly when seat belts are not used properly.
Phelps and surrounding areas see a range of traffic levels, and intersections between county roads and state routes often require precise timing and extra caution. Failure to yield during left turns is a leading cause of such crashes, often resulting in injuries like those sustained by Ohearn, Shafer, and Robinson.
Emergency medical response—including air transport via Mercy Flight—plays a critical role in increasing survival chances and improving outcomes after serious crashes. The presence of multiple EMS teams and local fire departments, as seen in this incident, shows how coordinated response efforts can make a real difference.
Beyond immediate medical concerns, crash victims frequently face extended recovery times, mounting healthcare expenses, and emotional distress. Legal issues and insurance complications can also arise—especially when multiple injuries and citations are involved.
