Philadelphia, PA (January 31, 2026) – A fatal multi-vehicle crash shut down Roosevelt Blvd in both directions early Friday morning, claiming the life of one person and injuring several others. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. beneath the Broad Street overpass, according to Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department.
Emergency responders, including medics and police units, were dispatched to the scene and worked to assist the injured. One person was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, while others sustained various injuries and were treated by paramedics. First responders from Philadelphia Fire and Rescue provided care on-site and worked to manage traffic and scene safety during the extended closure.
The crash began in the northbound lanes when two drivers—identified as a 55-year-old man and a 31-year-old man—were involved in a collision that disabled both of their vehicles. After the initial crash, additional vehicles struck the disabled cars.
In an effort to avoid further danger, both men exited their vehicles and attempted to cross the concrete median into the southbound lanes. As they did so, they were struck by a silver Toyota operated by a 21-year-old driver traveling southbound.
Authorities closed Roosevelt Blvd in both directions for several hours as investigators responded to the complex scene. As of approximately 9:30 a.m., lanes began to reopen, though significant traffic backups remained in the area.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the full sequence of events and assess whether any charges may be filed.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased, and we extend our hopes for healing and recovery to all those injured in this tragic crash.
