Phoenix, AZ (September 11, 2025) – A devastating wrong-way collision claimed the life of 33-year-old Arthur Cody Lomeli and left another person critically injured on Monday afternoon in north Phoenix. The crash took place on Happy Valley Rd near 34th Ave on September 8 and involved a head-on collision between two vehicles.
According to Phoenix police, Lomeli was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Happy Valley Rd when his vehicle struck an oncoming car head-on. Emergency crews arrived on scene quickly and transported Lomeli to a nearby hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle, a woman whose identity has not been released, was also seriously hurt and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Her current condition remains unknown.
Investigators are working to determine what caused Lomeli to drive the wrong way, including whether impairment, medical issues, or other contributing factors played a role in the tragic crash. Authorities have not provided further details as the investigation remains ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Arthur Cody Lomeli and offer our thoughts to the critically injured driver as she continues to fight for recovery.
Wrong-Way Accidents in Arizona
Wrong-way crashes are among the most lethal traffic incidents in Arizona. These accidents often result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities due to the head-on nature of the impact and the high speeds frequently involved. Unfortunately, the crash on Happy Valley Rd underscores the serious danger posed by vehicles traveling against the flow of traffic.
In recent years, Arizona has seen heightened efforts to prevent wrong-way driving, including the installation of thermal camera systems, improved signage, and freeway alert systems. However, these measures are often more effective on highways, while surface streets—like Happy Valley Rd—remain vulnerable.
Many wrong-way incidents are linked to driver impairment, fatigue, or confusion, particularly during off-peak hours or in areas with limited visibility. In this case, the exact cause remains under review, but the outcome illustrates just how quickly lives can be shattered by a single mistake.
Victims of wrong-way crashes frequently endure lifelong consequences—whether through physical trauma, emotional damage, or loss of a loved one. For families left behind, the grieving process is compounded by the need to understand what happened and what steps to take next.
