Platte Co, MO (December 4, 2025) – A serious two-vehicle crash occurred on Wednesday morning on I-29 South near the 11-mile marker when a wrong-way driver struck another vehicle, resulting in one person being hospitalized with moderate injuries.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident took place at approximately 7:30 a.m. on December 3. A 2007 Chevrolet, driven by a 55-year-old man from Kansas City, MO, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-29 when it collided head-on with a 2016 Mazda driven by a 56-year-old woman from Weston, MO.

Both vehicles sustained total damage and were towed from the scene by Express Tow. Emergency crews from the Kansas City Fire Department responded swiftly, and the female driver of the Mazda was transported to North Kansas City Hospital with moderate injuries. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, which likely helped prevent more severe trauma.

The driver of the Chevrolet, who was also properly restrained, was not listed as injured in the official report. The crash prompted assistance from multiple agencies, including Troopers C.W. Norris and B.C. Stark, as well as the Kansas City Police Department.

The collision remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet disclosed whether impairment, distraction, or a medical event may have contributed to the wrong-way entry onto the interstate.

We extend our best wishes to the injured driver and thank all responding units for their swift action at the scene.

Dangers of Wrong-Way Crashes on Missouri Interstates

Wrong-way collisions are among the most catastrophic types of crashes, often occurring without warning and at high speeds. These incidents frequently result in serious or fatal injuries due to the violent head-on impact. In Missouri, interstates like I-29 carry fast-moving traffic, making any wrong-way vehicle a critical emergency situation.

In this crash, a northbound vehicle entered the southbound lanes and struck another motorist near the 11-mile marker, a stretch of I-29 frequently used by commuters heading into the Kansas City metro area. Whether the wrong-way entry occurred at a nearby ramp or crossover is still under investigation.

Drivers involved in wrong-way crashes often have little time to react. While both drivers in this case were reportedly wearing seat belts, the force of a head-on collision often leads to significant vehicle damage and serious bodily harm, as seen in the injuries sustained by the Mazda driver.

These incidents also place responders at increased risk due to the chaotic nature of interstate crashes and the potential for secondary collisions in busy traffic zones.

For victims, recovery from a wrong-way crash can be physically and emotionally draining. Beyond the initial medical treatment, there may be long-term rehabilitation, insurance complications, and legal concerns. It is crucial for injured drivers and their families to understand their rights and seek appropriate support to manage the challenges ahead.
