Pleasant Hill, MO (August 18, 2025) – A collision involving an Amtrak charter train and a pickup truck occurred Sunday afternoon in Cass County, leaving multiple people with minor injuries. The crash took place at approximately 5:00 p.m. on August 17 at the intersection of a private drive and Missouri Highway 58, just outside Pleasant Hill.
According to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident happened when a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by a 64-year-old man from Pleasant Hill, attempted to cross the railroad tracks from a private drive. At that moment, an eastbound Amtrak charter train, identified as SC44 and operated by a 37-year-old man from Jefferson City, struck the towed unit attached to the truck.
The train was able to remain operational and continued from the scene with moderate damage reported. The Silverado, however, sustained extensive damage and was left at the crash site.
Emergency personnel from Cass County, along with multiple troopers and deputies, responded to the scene. Six passengers on the train, ranging in age from 51 to 66, reported minor injuries but refused medical treatment at the scene. All injured individuals were from Jefferson City or Fulton, MO.
Despite the dramatic nature of the crash, no one was transported to a hospital, and authorities confirmed that the train remained upright with no derailment.
The crash remains under investigation, and officials have not released further details regarding the circumstances of the truck’s attempt to cross the tracks.
We’re thankful that no serious injuries occurred in this incident and extend our best wishes to all involved.
Railroad Crossing Accidents in Missouri
Crashes at private railroad crossings are among the most dangerous types of traffic incidents in rural Missouri. These crossings often lack the safety features of public railroad intersections, such as crossing gates, lights, or audible warnings, placing more responsibility on drivers to visually confirm that tracks are clear before proceeding.
In Sunday’s crash near Pleasant Hill, a pickup truck attempted to cross tracks from a private drive and was struck by a chartered Amtrak train. While no one was seriously hurt, and the train continued under its own power, the potential for greater tragedy was significant—especially considering the number of passengers involved.
Missouri has hundreds of private rail crossings statewide, many of which connect rural homes or farmland to state highways like MO 58. These unregulated access points are particularly prone to incidents when drivers are unfamiliar with train schedules or visibility is limited. Additionally, vehicles towing trailers or heavy loads are at higher risk, as clearing the tracks may take longer than anticipated.
The age of the driver and the nature of the crossing suggest that visibility and timing may have played a role. While train operators and railroads are required to maintain proper control and adhere to safety protocols, drivers are equally responsible for ensuring their path is clear—especially when entering from private drives.
Although no medical transport was required in this case, the injuries sustained and the property damage involved highlight the seriousness of railroad-related crashes. For passengers and drivers alike, even minor injuries can develop into more significant issues over time, and vehicle owners often face insurance and recovery challenges after such incidents.
