Poplar Twp, MN (September 1, 2025) – First responders, including paramedics from Staples Ambulance, were called to the scene of a two-vehicle accident in Cass County that left two people injured. The crash occurred at approximately 5:43 p.m., along southbound Highway 64 at the intersection with 56th Street Southwest in Poplar Township.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the incident involved a 2012 Kia Forte and a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, both traveling south on Hwy 64. As traffic slowed near the intersection, the Kia came to a stop but was rear-ended by the approaching Silverado. Emergency medical personnel assessed the occupants at the scene and confirmed that two individuals from the Kia sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The injured parties included 18-year-old Kylee Marie Boman of Isanti, the driver of the Kia, and her passenger, 22-year-old Afton Martin Guyer of Otsego. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and were transported to Lakewood Health System for evaluation and treatment. The three occupants of the Silverado, two 16-year-old males and a 15-year-old male, were all reported uninjured and did not require hospitalization.
Road conditions were reported as dry at the time of the collision. Alcohol was not a factor, and airbags did not deploy in either vehicle. Authorities with District 2800-Brainerd are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we wish them a full and timely recovery.
Rear-End Collisions in Minnesota
The crash on Highway 64 in Poplar Township sheds light on the dangers of rear-end collisions, particularly in rural areas where traffic patterns can change suddenly. In this incident, the slowing of traffic at an intersection led to an impact that could have been far more serious if seat belts hadn’t been properly used by the occupants of both vehicles.
Rear-end crashes are among the most common types of traffic accidents in Minnesota and frequently result in injuries ranging from minor to severe. While factors such as weather and road conditions can contribute, this particular crash occurred on a dry roadway, highlighting the role of driver attention and following distance in preventing these incidents. Inattentiveness, distracted driving, or failing to maintain a safe distance often result in rear-end collisions like the one seen in Cass County.
The involvement of young drivers, such as the 16-year-old operating the Silverado, also raises important questions about education, awareness, and preparedness on the road. Ensuring that new drivers understand how to respond in traffic situations and recognize the need for defensive driving is a key element in preventing future accidents.
For those injured in such collisions, the path to recovery involves more than just medical treatment. Managing medical bills, understanding insurance rights, and seeking legal guidance are all part of the broader recovery process. Knowing where to turn for accurate information and supportive resources can make a significant difference.
