Post Falls, ID (September 10, 2025) – A tragic multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 90 claimed one life Monday afternoon and shut down westbound traffic for several hours while investigators and rescue teams worked to clear the scene.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 4:03 PM on September 8th, 2025, in the westbound lanes of I-90 near milepost 2 in Post Falls. According to the Idaho State Police, a gray 2013 Toyota Prius, driven by a 58-year-old man from Livingston, Montana, was heading eastbound when the vehicle failed to navigate a right curve. The Prius veered off the roadway to the north shoulder, crossed the center median, and entered the westbound lanes.
In a devastating sequence, the Prius struck the rear of a westbound 2024 Volvo semi-truck. The truck was occupied by a 38-year-old male driver and a 37-year-old female co-driver, both from Spokane, Washington. The impact caused severe damage to both the Prius and the semi-truck/trailer, with both vehicles coming to rest in the westbound lanes.
During the incident, two additional westbound vehicles were also impacted: a white 2019 Ford F-350 driven by a 23-year-old Spokane man, and a white 2019 Toyota Tundra driven by a 34-year-old man from Priest River, Idaho. Both vehicles sustained minor damage.
Miraculously, none of the occupants in the semi-truck, Ford, or Toyota Tundra reported injuries. However, the 58-year-old Prius driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His identity has been confirmed, and next of kin has been notified by the Kootenai County Coroner’s Office.
In the aftermath of the crash, westbound traffic on I-90 was completely closed for approximately three and a half hours. The interstate was fully reopened at 7:44 PM. The extensive emergency response effort included assistance from the Post Falls Police Department, Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Kootenai County Fire Rescue, and the Idaho Transportation Department.
