Queensbury, NY (September 24, 2025) – A serious early morning rollover crash involving a tractor trailer caused major disruption on the Northway (I-87) southbound in Warren County. The accident occurred around 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, leading to a full closure of all southbound lanes between Exit 20 (State Route 149) and Exit 19 (Aviation Rd).
According to the New York State Police, the crash began when a southbound tractor trailer lost control and overturned on the highway. Moments later, a second vehicle collided with the overturned rig. Emergency crews responded quickly and provided treatment to those injured at the scene. One of the drivers was transported to Albany Medical Center for additional medical care. The severity of the injuries has not yet been confirmed.
The rollover and subsequent collision left debris scattered across the lanes, prompting troopers to establish a detour at Exit 20. Traffic in the area was at a near standstill through the early morning commute as cleanup and investigation efforts continued.
State Police have launched a formal investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Early reports have not yet confirmed whether driver fatigue, weather, or mechanical issues may have played a role in the incident.
We extend our best wishes to the injured driver and hope for a smooth and full recovery.
Tractor Trailer Accidents in New York
Accidents involving commercial trucks, particularly rollovers like Wednesday’s incident on I-87, often result in severe roadway blockages and critical injuries. Tractor trailers pose unique hazards due to their size, weight, and the potential for multi-vehicle involvement when a crash occurs. In Queensbury and across the North Country, stretches of the Northway are frequently used for long-haul freight movement, which increases the risk of such incidents.
Rollover crashes can be caused by abrupt steering maneuvers, speeding on curves, fatigue, or shifting cargo—each of which can turn a routine trip into a dangerous event. When these crashes occur in low-light or early morning hours, as in this case, the likelihood of secondary collisions increases due to reduced visibility and driver reaction time.
Emergency responses to tractor trailer incidents often require extended closures due to the scale of cleanup, the need for specialized towing, and accident reconstruction by authorities. For those involved, the aftermath can include extensive medical treatment, long recovery times, and legal complexities related to liability and insurance.
As investigations continue, drivers in the region are reminded to remain patient during detours and use caution when sharing the road with commercial vehicles.
