Reno, NV (September 19, 2025) – Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash resulting in injuries Thursday morning on Interstate 580 near Moana Ln.
The accident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on the southbound side of I-580, just north of the Moana exit. According to initial reports, the driver of a Chevrolet Impala was traveling in the number one travel lane when they attempted an unsafe lane change into the number two lane. During the maneuver, the Impala collided with a Ford Explorer, causing the driver of the Impala to lose control of the vehicle.
Following the initial impact, the Impala veered across the number three travel lane and into the right shoulder, eventually crashing into a roadside attenuator. Both drivers sustained minor injuries in the collision. Emergency responders from Reno Fire Department and EMS provided on-site evaluation and care to those injured.
Traffic was temporarily slowed in the southbound lanes as troopers worked to clear the scene and conduct a preliminary investigation. Officials have not confirmed whether citations were issued, though lane change violations are under review.
We extend our thoughts to those involved and are thankful the injuries were not more severe.
Lane-Change Crashes in Nevada
Thursday morning’s crash on I-580 is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unsafe lane changes, particularly on major interstates like those running through Washoe County. Even during daylight hours, heavy traffic and high-speed limits on corridors like I-580 can turn small driving errors into serious accidents.
In this incident, the improper lane change by the Impala set off a chain of events that resulted in injuries and significant vehicle damage. Crashes involving attenuators—devices designed to absorb the force of high-speed impacts—can indicate just how severe a secondary collision may have been. Fortunately, in this case, the safety equipment functioned as intended, and only minor injuries were reported.
Unsafe lane changes are a leading cause of highway accidents in Nevada. Many are attributed to distracted driving, aggressive behavior, or failure to check blind spots. When crashes occur at highway speeds, even minor injuries can lead to long-term consequences for those involved—both physically and financially.
Recovery after an interstate collision often requires more than just medical care. Victims may need assistance with vehicle replacement, insurance negotiations, and time off work. Knowing where to turn for help is key to managing the aftermath and reducing the long-term effects of the crash.
