Richland, WA (August 12, 2025) – A pedestrian was struck and killed late Saturday night in Richland in a crash that police believe involved an impaired driver. The deadly incident occurred on George Washington Way, just east of the Safeway shopping center, shortly before midnight.
Richland Fire and Emergency Services arrived to find a 66-year-old man who had suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s name has not yet been released pending notification of family.
According to investigators, the driver—a 40-year-old man—was operating the vehicle believed to have caused the collision while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He was arrested and booked into the Benton County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide.
George Washington Way is one of Richland’s busiest corridors, with both heavy vehicle traffic and regular pedestrian activity, particularly in the commercial area near the Safeway. The roadway was closed for several hours overnight as authorities investigated and documented the scene.
Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and friends during this devastating time.
DUI-Related Pedestrian Fatalities in Washington
Crashes involving impaired drivers remain one of the leading causes of pedestrian deaths in Washington State. The tragic collision on George Washington Way underscores the lethal combination of intoxicated driving and pedestrian vulnerability. In such incidents, pedestrians have no physical protection from the force of impact, and survival chances are slim, especially when high speeds are involved.
In Washington, drivers found guilty of vehicular homicide due to impairment face severe criminal penalties, but the consequences for victims’ families extend far beyond legal justice. Survivors often endure emotional trauma, financial strain, and the long-term absence of a loved one.
Areas like the stretch of George Washington Way where this incident occurred present heightened risks for pedestrians because of commercial traffic, crosswalks, and frequent turning movements. Impairment drastically reduces a driver’s reaction time, awareness, and ability to make safe decisions, making any roadway more dangerous for those on foot.
Local law enforcement and traffic safety agencies continue to emphasize DUI prevention through public awareness campaigns, increased enforcement, and roadside checks. However, tragedies like Saturday night’s show that the threat remains a persistent and devastating problem.
For families impacted by fatal pedestrian crashes, having access to resources for emotional, legal, and financial support can make a critical difference in navigating the difficult months ahead.
