Richmond, CA (August 13, 2025) – A deadly crash involving two vehicles closed all eastbound lanes of Interstate 580 near the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge early Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision occurred at approximately 1:35 a.m. on August 12 near the South 23rd Street on-ramp. CHP reports indicate that a red SUV, possibly a Range Rover, and a black sedan collided in the No. 1 lane. The impact was severe enough to prompt a full closure of eastbound lanes while emergency crews responded.
At least one person died in the crash. Their identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Authorities have not confirmed whether any additional occupants were injured.
Tow trucks were requested for both vehicles, and traffic was diverted until the roadway was cleared. The cause of the collision is under investigation, with CHP reviewing speed, impairment, and other potential factors.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the person who lost their life in this tragic incident.
Deadly Interstate Collisions in the Bay Area
Fatal freeway crashes, like Tuesday morning’s collision on I-580, often occur at high speeds and can be intensified by lane changes, driver distraction, or impaired driving. Multi-lane interstates such as I-580 near the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge see heavy traffic at all hours, and even early-morning hours can present hazards from fatigued drivers or those traveling at excessive speeds.
Two-vehicle crashes involving SUVs and sedans can be particularly dangerous due to differences in size, weight, and structural build, which can lead to uneven impact forces and more severe injuries for occupants of smaller vehicles.
When a fatal crash occurs, surviving families are often left with unexpected emotional and financial burdens, including funeral costs and the loss of income or companionship. Investigations into these collisions can also be complex, requiring accident reconstruction and toxicology testing to determine contributing factors.
