Richmond Township, MN (September 6, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision in Winona County left two men with non-life-threatening injuries on Friday afternoon. The crash happened around 1:50 p.m. on southbound Highway 61 at Spillway Dr, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Authorities reported that a 2021 Hyundai Elantra and a 2012 Chevrolet Escalade were both traveling southbound when they collided near the Spillway Dr intersection. The impact caused the airbags to deploy in the Hyundai.
The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 35-year-old Erek Joseph Wodele of Holmen, WI, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Winona Health for treatment. The driver of the Escalade, 80-year-old Edward William Smith of Saint Charles, MN, was also injured but did not require hospital care.
An 18-year-old passenger in the Escalade, Addison Taylor Smith, was not injured in the crash. Authorities confirmed that all occupants were wearing seat belts and that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
Outside agencies assisting at the scene included the Winona County Sheriff’s Office, Winona County Ambulance, and Pickwick Fire. The road was reported to be dry at the time of the accident.
The Minnesota State Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
Highway Collisions in Minnesota
Friday afternoon’s crash on Highway 61 highlights the risks of multi-vehicle collisions along Minnesota’s busy state routes. While both drivers escaped with non-life-threatening injuries, incidents like this often result in far more serious outcomes due to highway speeds and traffic density.
Highway 61 is a major route through southeastern Minnesota, connecting local and regional traffic. Intersections like Spillway Dr present particular challenges where turning vehicles and through traffic intersect at high speeds. Driver inattention, misjudged spacing, or sudden lane changes are common contributors to these types of crashes.
The use of seat belts in this collision was an important factor in preventing more severe injuries. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, proper seat belt use reduces the risk of fatal injury in crashes by nearly half. This case reinforces the lifesaving impact of restraint use.
For those involved, the aftermath of a crash includes not only immediate medical needs but also recovery time, vehicle repairs, and potential financial stress. Even non-life-threatening injuries can require ongoing treatment and disrupt daily life.
As Minnesota continues efforts to improve roadway safety, drivers are reminded to maintain safe following distances, remain attentive at intersections, and avoid distractions while on the road.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a crash like the one on Hwy 61, seeking medical care and understanding your rights are essential first steps.
