Ripley County, MO (May 15, 2025) – A serious head-on collision occurred early Wednesday morning on US Highway 160, approximately six miles east of Doniphan, leaving two drivers injured and both vehicles totaled.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash took place at around 7:05 a.m. when a westbound 2017 Ford Mustang, driven by a 50-year-old man from Poplar Bluff, crossed the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound 2018 GMC Acadia, driven by a 44-year-old woman from Doniphan.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene. The driver of the Acadia sustained injuries and was transported by Ripley County Ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Mustang, however, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by Air Evac to Region 1 Health in Memphis.
Both vehicles were severely damaged and had to be towed from the scene—one by Junior’s Towing and the other by Randy’s Towing. The incident remains under investigation by Troop E of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
We extend our sincere wishes for recovery to both individuals injured in this crash.
Head-on Collisions in Missouri Often Lead to Life-Altering Consequences
Crashes involving vehicles crossing the center line, such as the one on US 160, are among the most dangerous types of accidents on Missouri’s roadways. Head-on impacts, even at moderate speeds, generate enormous force, frequently resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. In this incident, both drivers were using seat belts, which likely helped reduce the severity of their injuries.
US 160 in Ripley County serves as a key connector for residents in rural southeast Missouri. Though less congested than urban highways, these rural routes often lack median dividers and may have limited visibility around curves or hills. A single moment of inattention or miscalculation can lead to tragic outcomes.
Injuries from head-on crashes can range from broken bones and spinal trauma to internal injuries or traumatic brain injuries. While the female driver’s injuries were classified as minor, the male driver’s condition required urgent air transport, signaling the seriousness of the trauma sustained.
Beyond the physical damage, victims and their families often face emotional stress, financial burdens from medical costs, and time away from work. When serious injuries are involved, long-term rehabilitation or even permanent lifestyle adjustments may follow.
Law enforcement agencies continue to stress the importance of attentive driving and staying within lane boundaries, especially on rural highways where options for evasive action are limited. Community awareness, proper road maintenance, and defensive driving education can all play a role in reducing these high-risk crashes.
