Riverhead, NY – Two Injured in Motorcycle Crash on Edwards Ave

August 31, 2025

Riverhead, NY (August 31, 2025) – Two motorcyclists were injured in a serious crash on Edwards Ave in Calverton on Saturday morning. The accident occurred around 11:27 a.m. near Cousins Paintball when a motorcycle collided with a vehicle making a left turn into the business, according to Riverhead Town police.

First responders, including the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, arrived at the scene and provided immediate care. The male rider was treated for multiple injuries at the scene before being transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The female passenger sustained serious physical injuries and was airlifted by Suffolk County Police aviation to Stony Brook University Hospital for advanced treatment. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

Authorities said the vehicle involved had been traveling northbound on Edwards Ave and was attempting a left turn into Cousins Paintball when it collided with the southbound motorcycle. The New York State Police accident reconstruction team responded to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing.

Our thoughts go out to the victims as we hope for their recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in New York

Motorcycle accidents often result in severe injuries due to the limited protection riders have compared to occupants of passenger vehicles. Crashes like the one on Edwards Ave in Calverton highlight the dangers motorcyclists face, especially at intersections where turning vehicles frequently fail to see oncoming bikes.

In New York, thousands of motorcycle crashes are reported each year, many leading to catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Data from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles indicates that motorcyclists are several times more likely to suffer serious injuries in collisions compared to drivers of passenger vehicles. Left-turn crashes, such as the one in Riverhead, are among the most common scenarios leading to motorcycle accidents.

Beyond immediate physical harm, victims often endure long recoveries, including surgeries, rehabilitation, and lost wages. The emotional and financial toll on families can be overwhelming, especially in cases involving serious injuries like those sustained by the passenger in this crash.

Community safety advocates urge both motorcyclists and drivers to remain vigilant. Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear proper protective gear and practice defensive riding, while drivers must take extra care at intersections and when making left turns to check for approaching motorcycles.
