Riverton, UT (August 15, 2025) – A 21-year-old man riding an electric bike was killed early Thursday morning in a crash involving a utility truck in Riverton.
The incident occurred just before 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of 1300 West and 12600 South, according to local police. Preliminary findings suggest the utility truck was traveling westbound when it allegedly ran a red light, striking the e-bike rider, later identified as Owen Thomsen.
Authorities say Thomsen was thrown more than 180 feet due to the impact. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Both the driver and passenger in the utility vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. While no arrests have been made, police are investigating high speed as a contributing factor to the fatal crash.
Red-Light and Speed-Related Crashes in Utah
Collisions caused by red-light violations often result in severe or fatal outcomes—especially when combined with excessive speed. E-bike riders, like pedestrians and motorcyclists, are particularly vulnerable in these situations due to the lack of physical protection.
This tragic crash highlights the critical need for driver vigilance and strict adherence to traffic signals. Investigations into crashes involving suspected red-light violations often include surveillance review, witness statements, and data collection from vehicle systems.
