Roanoke, VA (May 20, 2025) – A tragic early-morning crash on Sunday has claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman and led to the arrest of the driver, according to the Roanoke Police Department. The single-vehicle crash occurred around 3:24 a.m. at the intersection of Gainsboro Rd and Harrison Ave NW.
Police arrived to find a severely damaged vehicle upside down and lodged in a tree. Two women were inside the car at the time of the crash, while two men were found outside. One of the women, identified as Brooklin Goff, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other woman was taken to a nearby hospital and later released.
One of the men suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized. The second man, identified as the driver Xaviar Gaither, 21, has been arrested and charged with DUI and manslaughter.
Investigators determined that the vehicle had been speeding along Gainsboro Rd SW in the left lane. At one point, Gaither attempted to switch back into the right lane, but the car struck a curb, left the roadway, hit a streetlight, went airborne, and ultimately crashed into a tree, landing upside down.
The violent nature of the crash and the vehicle’s final position highlight the extreme force involved. Police are continuing their investigation and have not released further details regarding additional charges or toxicology results.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Brooklin Goff and send well wishes to those recovering from this heartbreaking incident.
The Dangers of Speeding and Impaired Driving in Virginia
This devastating crash in Roanoke underscores the deadly consequences of high-speed driving and intoxicated operation of a vehicle. Speed and impairment are two of the leading causes of fatal traffic incidents in Virginia and across the U.S.
In this case, the combination of elevated speed, poor lane control, and alleged intoxication created a perfect storm for disaster. The tragic loss of a young life and the serious injuries sustained by others involved show how quickly decisions made behind the wheel can turn deadly.
Families who lose loved ones due to another driver’s recklessness often face emotional trauma compounded by financial and legal complexities. Virginia’s laws provide pathways for justice through criminal prosecution—as seen in the charges against Gaither—and civil actions such as wrongful death claims.
Public awareness campaigns, stricter enforcement, and community outreach continue to play vital roles in reducing DUI and speed-related crashes. However, lasting change requires personal accountability and responsible choices from every driver.
If you’ve lost someone due to a preventable crash, you have the right to seek answers and support in your path toward healing.
