Rochester, NY (July 3, 2025) – A vehicle rear-ended a stopped RTS bus on Mount Hope Avenue near Comfort Street Wednesday evening, leaving two individuals injured. The crash occurred just after 6:00 p.m., according to a statement from the Rochester Police Department.
Authorities say the RTS bus was stationary at the time of the incident when it was struck from behind by a northbound vehicle. The driver of the car, a 21-year-old man, and his 10-year-old passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Fortunately, no passengers on the bus were injured, and the bus sustained only minor damage. Police confirmed that no citations were issued in connection with the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The roadway remained open during the response, though traffic was briefly slowed while emergency personnel assisted those involved.
We extend our best wishes to the injured individuals for a smooth and full recovery.
Transit-Involved Accidents in Rochester, NY
Crashes involving public transit vehicles—such as Wednesday’s incident on Mount Hope Avenue—serve as reminders of the vulnerability of vehicle occupants in rear-end collisions, even when buses or larger vehicles are safely stopped. While bus passengers often benefit from reinforced frames and safety designs, individuals in smaller cars frequently bear the brunt of the impact.
Rear-end collisions are one of the most common crash types and are typically linked to inattention, distracted driving, or following too closely. In this case, even without traffic violations being cited, the consequences for the injured parties may include medical care, missed time from work or school, and emotional trauma—particularly for younger passengers.
Rochester’s transit corridors, like Mount Hope Avenue, are frequently shared by public buses, cyclists, and passenger vehicles. Maintaining safe following distances and anticipating frequent stops are essential strategies for preventing these types of collisions.
