Pedestrian Fatalities in Rural and Suburban Michigan Areas
While pedestrian accidents are often associated with busy urban streets, rural and suburban areas like Ross Township near Gull Lake present their own unique dangers. Roads such as M-89 can lack crosswalks, lighting, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, making nighttime travel especially hazardous for individuals on foot.
According to the Michigan State Police, pedestrian fatalities in non-urban areas accounted for more than 30% of such deaths in 2024. Factors such as limited visibility, higher vehicle speeds, and longer emergency response times contribute to the heightened risk.
It is especially critical for drivers in these areas to stay alert after dark and reduce speed in areas where pedestrians may be present—even when sidewalks are not visible. For pedestrians, reflective clothing and flashlights can help improve safety when crossing unlit roads.
Crashes involving pedestrians often result in devastating consequences, particularly for older adults. In addition to the emotional toll, families are often left with significant legal and financial decisions in the aftermath.
