Rural Poinsett, AR (January 17, 2026) – A serious collision along I-555 Southbound left one man dead and another injured Thursday evening near Mile Marker 13 in Poinsett County. The crash occurred at approximately 5:50 p.m. on January 16, during cloudy conditions and on a wet roadway.
According to Arkansas State Police, a 2000 Mazda traveling northbound left the roadway for unknown reasons, struck a cable barrier, and crossed the median into oncoming southbound traffic. A 2023 Freightliner, heading south, collided with the Mazda shortly after it entered the lane.
The driver of the Mazda, identified as 56-year-old Larry Alton Neal of Bay, sustained fatal injuries. His body was transported to Delancey Funeral Home. The Freightliner’s driver, 48-year-old Mark Carter Torbert Jr. of Hurtsboro, AL, suffered injuries and was taken to NEA Baptist for medical treatment.
First responders from Poinsett County worked at the scene to assist the injured and manage traffic in the aftermath of the crash. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, and the highway was partially shut down as crews worked to investigate and clear the wreckage.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident, including whether road conditions or other factors played a role. No further details have been released at this time.
