Salt Lake City, UT (May 13, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash in downtown Salt Lake City sent multiple people to the hospital Sunday evening and led to a major road closure as police investigated the scene.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the crash occurred just before 7:00 p.m. at the intersection of 500 South and 300 West. One vehicle, a “for-hire” car carrying four passengers, was traveling southbound on 300 West when it was struck by another car heading westbound on 500 South with five occupants.
Three individuals in the for-hire vehicle sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital by emergency responders. A fourth person in that vehicle was not injured. The five individuals in the second vehicle were not believed to be seriously hurt but planned to self-transport to the hospital for precautionary evaluation.
As of 8:00 p.m., the intersection remained closed while officials investigated and cleared the area. Detours were set in place to redirect traffic around the scene. No further updates were provided Sunday night.
We extend our best wishes to all injured and hope for a full recovery.
High-Traffic Urban Intersections: Risk Factors and Response in Salt Lake City
Urban intersections like 500 South and 300 West in Salt Lake City are particularly vulnerable to multi-vehicle crashes due to high volumes of traffic, complex turning patterns, and increased ride-share and delivery activity. This crash, which involved a “for-hire vehicle,” reflects how the growing use of ride services intersects with everyday traffic risks.
Crashes at signalized intersections often involve high lateral forces, especially when one vehicle fails to yield or misjudges timing during a left turn or red light scenario. The impact is magnified when vehicles are carrying multiple passengers, increasing the number of injuries and complicating rescue and transport logistics.
Emergency response in such settings requires coordination between paramedics, fire crews, and law enforcement to manage care and restore traffic flow safely. While the injuries in this case were not life-threatening, any crash with multiple occupants and overlapping routes requires thorough documentation for insurance, liability, and public safety assessment.
