San Bernardino, CA – Fatal Accident on I-215 S at 5th St

April 13, 2025

San Bernardino, CA (April 13, 2025) – A fatal crash led to the full closure of I-215 Southbound near 5th St on Saturday morning. The collision occurred around 8:50 a.m. and involved two vehicles: a black Chevrolet Tahoe and a black Chevrolet sedan. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, but despite life-saving efforts, one individual was tragically pronounced dead.

First responders, including paramedics and fire crews, worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. At least one vehicle was reported to have major front-end damage, and both were found blocking multiple lanes, including the HOV and slow lanes. One party was unresponsive, and CPR was administered by fire personnel before the scene was declared a fatal incident.

Due to the severity of the crash and extensive debris across all lanes, a full SigAlert was issued, and traffic was rerouted via round-robin techniques at 2nd and 3rd Streets. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased or confirmed the total number of individuals involved in the crash. An evidence tow was requested, and cleanup and investigation efforts are expected to cause extended delays through the morning.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. Factors such as lane changes, speed, or potential mechanical failure are under review. No information about arrests or citations has been released.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim and all those affected by this tragic event.

Highway Fatalities on I-215 in San Bernardino County

The I-215 corridor through San Bernardino is a heavily traveled route, especially during the morning commute. With multiple merging lanes, commercial traffic, and high-speed limits, this stretch of freeway has seen a rise in serious collisions over recent years. According to data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, San Bernardino County recorded more than 300 traffic fatalities in 2023, many of which occurred on major interstates like I-215.

Crashes involving SUVs and sedans at freeway speeds often result in devastating injuries or fatalities, particularly when collisions span multiple lanes or involve loss of control. Morning rush hour also presents increased risks due to high vehicle density, distractions, and the rush to reach destinations.

Motorists are urged to maintain safe distances, reduce speed in congested zones, and remain attentive at all times. Tragic incidents like this remind us of the importance of responsible driving habits on California’s highways.
