San Bernardino, CA (January 1, 2025) – A tragic vehicle versus pedestrian collision occurred early Monday morning on Interstate 215 Southbound at the 5th St off-ramp in San Bernardino. The incident resulted in a fatality and caused significant disruptions as emergency crews responded to the scene.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a report at approximately 2:52 AM indicating that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. Witnesses stated that the individual was standing in the middle of the roadway when the collision occurred. Debris, including clothing and personal belongings, was found scattered across the lanes. Emergency responders, including San Bernardino Police Department (SBPD) and CHP units, arrived shortly after 3:00 AM to manage the situation.

The 5th St off-ramp was temporarily closed to traffic for an extended period as authorities conducted a hard closure to facilitate an investigation and clear the scene. Edwin’s Towing was dispatched to remove the involved vehicle, which was taken as evidence. The off-ramp was reopened by 5:28 AM.

CHP and local law enforcement are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

California frequently experiences pedestrian-involved traffic accidents, particularly in high-traffic areas like interstates and urban zones. Pedestrian collisions often result in severe or fatal outcomes due to the vulnerability of those on foot compared to the size and speed of vehicles.

Highway settings, such as the area around I-215 and 5th St, pose unique risks for pedestrians, including limited visibility and high vehicle speeds. Victims and their families often face profound emotional and financial challenges following such incidents.

Preventative measures, including better roadway lighting, enhanced signage, and public education on pedestrian safety, are critical in reducing these accidents. Drivers are urged to remain alert, especially in areas where pedestrians may unexpectedly enter roadways.
