San Bernardino County, CA (August 18, 2025) – A deadly crash occurred early Saturday morning on southbound I-15 near mile marker 170, just north of Zzyzx Rd, involving a black SUV and a semi-truck. California Highway Patrol dispatch logs confirm that the incident led to at least one fatality and forced extended lane closures as crews worked to manage the scene and investigate the circumstances.
The crash, reported around 6:13 a.m., involved a black SUV that rear-ended a semi-truck and then came to rest in the center divider. Initial reports from the semi driver indicated no injuries on their end; however, CPR was later performed on at least one occupant of the SUV. Despite efforts by emergency responders, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The collision resulted in debris across the lanes and forced Caltrans to shut down the #1 lane for an extended period. CHP units, including A73-086 and A73-076, responded to the incident and initiated traffic breaks to safely manage flow around the scene. At one point, officers working in the center divider reported being unprotected while performing lifesaving efforts, prompting urgent requests for backup and lane closures.
A rotation tow was requested for evidence processing, and American Towing responded to the scene. By mid-morning, all lanes were eventually reopened, but not before significant delays impacted southbound traffic.
An investigation is ongoing, and no further identifying details about the deceased have been released at this time.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic crash.
Fatal Semi-Truck Collisions on California Freeways
Fatal accidents involving passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks, such as the one that occurred near Zzyzx Rd on I-15, are unfortunately all too common on California’s high-speed freight corridors. In this case, the SUV reportedly rear-ended a semi—an impact that can be catastrophic due to the size and weight differential between vehicle types.
The I-15 corridor through San Bernardino County is a major route for commercial freight, with heavy truck traffic 24 hours a day. Rear-end collisions are often linked to driver inattention, following too closely, or high speeds—especially in early morning hours when fatigue or low visibility may be a factor.
When a fatality occurs in a crash with a semi, investigations are particularly complex. Evidence towing, digital reconstruction, and multi-agency coordination are all standard components of the process. Meanwhile, surviving family members are left to cope with emotional devastation and the logistical challenges of dealing with medical examiners, insurance companies, and, in many cases, wrongful death procedures.
If your loved one has died in a collision with a commercial truck, it is vital to understand your rights and the steps involved in seeking justice and closure. Timely access to investigative reports, legal insight, and emotional support resources can be life-changing for grieving families.
