San Diego, CA (August 6, 2025) – A deadly crash involving a person reportedly riding a bicycle claimed one life early Wednesday morning on Interstate 5 near the Mile of Cars Way exit. The California Highway Patrol classified the incident as a fatal traffic collision under code 1144, with multiple vehicles involved and several southbound lanes shut down for hours during the investigation and cleanup.
According to CHP radio communications, the crash happened at approximately 12:52 a.m. in the #1 lane of I-5 South. A driver reported swerving to avoid a person on a bike, but the pedestrian moved in the same direction, resulting in a collision. Multiple vehicles, including a Nissan and a BMW, pulled over near the center divider and right shoulder following the incident. Emergency responders and Caltrans crews arrived on scene to assist and initiate a hard closure of lanes 1 through 3.
Despite rapid intervention, the bicyclist succumbed to injuries at the scene. Hazmat teams were also requested due to cleanup needs related to the incident. The identity of the deceased has not yet been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.
Southbound traffic on I-5 experienced significant delays, with vehicles reversing on the right shoulder to exit the freeway as responders secured the area. The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the sequence of events and whether other contributing factors were involved.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic crash.
Bicycle Collisions in California
The fatal crash on I-5 near the Mile of Cars exit tragically underscores the risks cyclists face when riding near or on high-speed roadways. While freeways are typically off-limits to bicycles, rare circumstances—such as vehicle breakdowns or riders unaware of restrictions—can lead to extremely dangerous situations.
California sees a high volume of bicycle-related injuries and fatalities annually. According to recent state data, more than 120 bicyclists are killed in collisions across California each year, with thousands more suffering serious injuries. Incidents occurring on major highways like I-5 tend to be particularly devastating due to speed and limited visibility during nighttime hours.
This collision raises further concern about cyclist and pedestrian presence in areas not intended for foot or bicycle traffic. Whether due to confusion, lack of signage, or other emergencies, encountering a cyclist in the fast lane of a freeway creates a perilous scenario for everyone on the road.
It also reinforces the importance of heightened alertness for drivers, especially in low-light conditions. Even on controlled-access roads, unexpected hazards can emerge, and a split-second reaction can have irreversible consequences.
For the loved ones left behind, a fatal bicycle collision leaves emotional trauma and unanswered questions. Legal and investigative processes may offer some clarity, but the human cost is immeasurable.
